Michael F. Hanley

Mr. Hanley focuses on medical malpractice, products liability, personal injury, employment and commercial litigation in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Courts of Appeals for the First and Second Circuits, the United States District Courts for the Districts of Vermont and New Hampshire, and all state courts and federal courts in Vermont and New Hampshire and the Supreme Judicial Court of Maine.

Mr. Hanley received a B.A. in history, and was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa, from St. Lawrence University in 1972. He received a J.D. from Notre Dame Law School in 1976.

Mr. Hanley has an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell, is selected for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America, U.S. News & World Reports Best Lawyers and New England Superlawyers. He is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, the Vermont Bar Association, the New Hampshire Bar Association, and the American, Vermont and New Hampshire Associations for Justice.

He maintains an active mediation practice in every kind of case including, but not limited to, personal injury, professional liability, civil rights and divorce matters. He is one of the few lawyers practicing in northern New England who has represented both patients and doctors in medical malpractice matters, clients and lawyers in legal malpractice litigation, consumers and manufacturers in products liability matters, customers and borrowers in banking disputes and individuals and institutions in civil rights litigation.

Representative cases include Okemo Mountain, Inc. v. Sikorski, 303 Fed. Appx. 938 (2d Cir. 2008); Ulm v. Ford Motor Co., 150 Vt. 281 (2000); Earle v. State of Vermont, 170 Vt. 183 (1999); Thompson v. Dewey’s South Royalton, 169 Vt. 274 (1999); Crump v. P & C Food Markets, Inc., 154 Vt. 284 (1990); Russo v. Griffin, 147 Vt. 20 (1986).

Mr. Hanley lives in Hanover, New Hampshire with his wife, Maureen. They have four children who regularly banish him to “Bugs,” his “classic plastic” sailboat on Casco Bay. He is an avid amateur photographer whose pictures are shown on the firm’s website.
