Litigating Complex And Landmark Cases

As a result of our cases, courts have adopted strict products liability, abandoned the locality rule in medical malpractice cases to ease recovery for legal malpractice, established the right of employees to recover for significant emotional distress from wrongful termination, expanded the group of people who may recover in dram shop actions, adopted rules making it more difficult for defendants in child sexual abuse cases to escape liability under the statute of limitations, and enlarged the group of people who have a duty to protect children from sexual abuse.

Our cases are consistently among the most complex cases on the state and federal court dockets in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Since 1952, clients, colleagues and adversaries have recognized us for our skill, experience and integrity, and especially, the results we achieve.

Why Choose Plante & Hanley, P.C.?

The lawyers at Plante & Hanley, P.C. take equal pride in representing people who need help after they've been injured or lost a loved one, as they do representing people and companies in business disputes.

Our attorneys are admitted to practice in all state and federal courts of Vermont and New Hampshire and have tried hundreds of cases to verdict, but also deliver settlements through negotiation and mediation so that our clients control the outcome of their cases.

Our History

Plante & Hanley, P.C. began as Black & Plante in 1952, when Henry Black and Peter Plante formed a partnership in White River Junction at about the time the interstate was being built in Vermont. Henry and Peter tried a great number of land condemnation cases to verdict for Vermonters whose real property was condemned for the interstate. They also achieved national attention when they obtained a directed judgment of acquittal after the prosecution presented the testimony of 28 witnesses in a murder trial. Accounts of the case were published in London, in the Sunday Express of Glasgow, Scotland, and in Look magazine and in a handful of books. Both were giants of the Vermont legal profession.

Our Practice Today

Plante & Hanley, P.C. has a distinctive track record with complex, high-value cases. While the firm's focus may have changed since the 1950s and 1960s, the experience, skill, innovation of its lawyers, and results, remain constant.
